How We Work

Our Process

01

Design & Specification

We measure the space, develop drawings, and specify every dimension, joint, and finish so nothing is left to chance at the shop.

02

Material Selection

You review wood species, veneers, hardware, and finish samples in person so the final piece feels exactly the way you imagined.

03

Fabrication Coordination

We hand the package to a vetted DFW millwork shop, review shop drawings, and stay close throughout the build to protect quality.

04

Installation & Finish

On install day we coordinate trades, scribe everything to the room, and handle final touch ups so the result looks built in from day one.

The Details

Materials & Craftsmanship

Custom millwork is only as good as the wood, the joinery, and the people behind it. Here is how we think about each.

Wood Selection

From rift cut white oak to walnut and painted poplar, we help you choose species that suit your light, your style, and the way the room will be used over time.

Joinery & Finish

Tight reveals, soft close hardware, and hand applied finishes are the difference between custom and contractor grade. We specify the details that make a piece feel heirloom quality.

Trusted Shop Partners

DKT Interiors designs every piece in house and partners with experienced millwork shops across Dallas Fort Worth. The right shop for the job means cleaner work and reliable timelines.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

What is the difference between custom millwork and stock cabinetry?

Stock cabinetry is mass produced in fixed sizes, finishes, and configurations. Custom millwork is designed and built specifically for your space, your dimensions, your storage needs, and your aesthetic. That means we can work around odd walls, tall ceilings, plumbing, and architectural quirks that stock pieces simply cannot accommodate. The result is a built-in that looks like it was always meant to be there.

Do you have your own shop or work with millwork partners?

DKT Interiors is a design firm, not a fabrication shop. We design every piece in detail and then partner with vetted millwork shops across the Dallas Fort Worth area to fabricate and install the work. This lets us match each project with the right craftsman for the wood species, finish, and complexity involved, rather than forcing every job through one in-house line.

How long does custom millwork take from design to install?

Most custom millwork projects take eight to sixteen weeks from approved drawings to installed piece, depending on scope, wood selection, and finish. A simple set of built-in shelves moves faster than a full kitchen of inset cabinetry. We build realistic timelines into your project schedule and keep you updated as fabrication progresses at the shop.

What woods and finishes do you typically work with?

We routinely specify white oak, walnut, maple, rift cut oak, and painted poplar or MDF for traditional built-ins. Finishes range from clear matte oils that show the grain to hand-rubbed stains and sprayed lacquers in any color. The right choice depends on use, light, surrounding materials, and the look you are after, and we walk you through samples before anything is ordered.

How is custom millwork priced?

Custom millwork is priced by the linear or square foot of cabinetry, plus the complexity of the design, hardware, wood species, and finish. Because every piece is bespoke, we provide quotes after we have measured the space and developed the design. We are upfront about budget ranges early so there are no surprises later.

Can custom millwork be installed in an existing room?

Yes. Most of our millwork projects are retrofits into existing homes and offices around Flower Mound, Dallas, and Fort Worth. We field measure carefully, design around existing conditions like baseboards and electrical, and coordinate installation to minimize disruption. Painters and finishers handle final touch ups on site so the new work blends seamlessly with the room.
